BioSafety Cabinet

BioSafety Cabinet Manufacturer

A biosafety cabinet (BSC) is a specialized, enclosed laboratory workspace designed to protect researchers, laboratory personnel, and the environment from exposure to infectious agents and hazardous biological materials. BSCs are essential in laboratories that handle pathogens, toxins, and other biohazards, providing a controlled environment that minimizes the risk of contamination and ensures the safety of both the user and the materials being handled.

Biosafety cabinets operate by using high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters to create a sterile airflow within the workspace. This airflow prevents airborne contaminants from escaping the cabinet and protects the samples from external contamination. Depending on the type and level of protection required, BSCs are classified into three main categories: Class I, Class II, and Class III. Class I cabinets provide protection to personnel and the environment but do not protect the product. Class II cabinets offer protection to the personnel, environment, and the product, making them the most commonly used in research and healthcare settings. Class III cabinets provide the highest level of containment, typically used for handling the most dangerous pathogens.

A key feature of biosafety cabinets is their ability to maintain a sterile environment while allowing for the safe manipulation of hazardous materials. This is achieved through a combination of inward airflow, HEPA filtration, and a physical barrier (usually a sash or shield). The work area inside a BSC is designed to minimize turbulence and ensure smooth airflow, reducing the likelihood of cross-contamination.
